1.0 Introduction
Mahanyasam is one of the preliminary invocations, while performing śrī rudra ekādaśinī.
rudra ekādaśinī is chanting śrī rudram eleven times.
Since śrī rudram is the prinicipal of vedic mantras, it is considered not to chant it alone.
Similar to the custody of valuable gold or diamond ornaments, which are kept in a suitable case and placed in a safe, śrī rudra japam is preceded by a prolonged series of rituals, of which mahanyasam is of major importance.
A typical format of śrī rudra ekādaśinī is as follows.
2.1 achamanam 2.2 śrī guru vandanam 2.3 pradikshina of mandapa 2.4 anujna 2.5 vignesvara puja 2.6 maha sankalpa 2.7 vignesvara yathasthana 3.1 nandi and dhana 3.2 nandi shraddam 3.3 vaishnava shraddam 3.4 go dhanam 3.5 dasha dhanam 3.6 kruchchracaranam 4.0 acarya rtvik varanam 5.2 kalasa sthapanam 5.3 varuna avahanam and puja 5.4 punyahavacana japam including pavamana suktam mahānyāsaḥ 6.1 pañcāṅga rudra nyāsa: 6.2 pañca mukha nyāsa: 6.3 keśādi pādānta nyāsa: 6.4 daśāṅga nyāsa: 6.5 pañcāṅga nyāsa 6.6 hamsa gāyatrī 6.7 dik saṁpuṭa nyāsa: 6.8 ṣoḍaśāṅga raudrīkaraṇaṁ 6.9 guhyādi mastakāntaṁ ṣaḍaṅga nyāsa: 6.10 ātmarakṣā 6.11 śiva saṅkalpa: 6.12 puruṣa sūktaṁ 6.13 uttara nārāyaṇaṁ 6.14 apratirathaṁ 6.15 prati pūruṣadvayaṁ 6.16 śata rudrīyaṁ 6.17 pañcāṅga japa: 6.18 aṣṭāṅga praṇāma: Sixteen step puja rudra thrishathee archana pradikshina and namaskara prarthana sri rudra japam (11 times) abhishekam concluding rituals
